Buying guides
Pet gear that belongs in a well-kept home.
Most pet furniture is built to photograph well and fail quietly. These guides tell you what to check before you buy, and name the downside of everything we recommend.
The guides
Nine problems, nine guides.
One per Pinterest board. Each ends with a checklist and a short list of products that pass it.
- Cat furniture Modern Cat Furniture Why most cat trees wobble, shed carpet and get ignored, and the four specs that separate a tree your cat uses from one you throw out.
- Big cats Big Cat Solutions Maine Coons, Ragdolls and any cat over six kilos break normal cat furniture. The weight ratings, base widths and perch sizes that actually hold.
- Dog crates Stylish Dog Crates & Furniture Wire crates look like cages and wooden ones get chewed through. How to find a crate that works as furniture without failing as a crate.
- Living room Pet-Proof Living Room Sofas shredded, rugs stained, hair on everything. The fabrics, finishes and layouts that survive pets without making the room look like a kennel.
- Litter boxes Litter Box Ideas That Don't Smell The room smells no matter how often you scoop. The box design, litter type and placement rules that fix it, and the products that get it right.
- Dog beds Dog Beds Worth Buying Flattened in three months, cover that won't come off, smells you can't wash out. The foam density, cover and sizing specs that separate a bed that lasts.
- Walks & gear Walks & Gear That Fits Harnesses that rub, leashes that fray, collars that slip. The fit points, hardware and materials that make walking gear last, and look decent by the door.
- Renting Renter-Friendly Pet Homes No drilling, no stains, no marks at move-out. The freestanding furniture and washable pieces that keep a pet and a deposit in the same apartment.
- Gifts Pet Gift Guides Gifts for pet people are either a novelty mug or a three-hundred-dollar bed. The useful middle, with each pick's downside stated so you don't give a dud.
How we pick
Every recommendation names its flaw.
A product page tells you what's good about a cat tree. It won't tell you the sisal frays in six months. We will.
Grove Cat Tree
Tuft + Paw · $250–600
Known flaw
Priced like a side table, and the felt hammock pills within a few months under a heavy cat.
- 01
Start from the complaint
Each guide opens with the one-star review, in the buyer's words. Wobbles. Smells. Looks like a cage.
- 02
Explain why it fails
Particle board, no anchors, plastic that micro-scratches. The mechanism, so you can spot it on any product page.
- 03
Name the flaw in every pick
Every product we recommend has its known downside on the card. If we can't find one, the product doesn't go on the page.
"Some links pay us a commission. That's how the site is funded, and it never changes what we say about a product."
The list
A few emails a year, not a weekly newsletter.
One email when something actually passes the checklist
We test new releases against the specs in each guide and write only when one clears them.
